Photo setup
-

Photo setup I was boiling water for bath and the steam emanating out of the vessel looked so beautiful. I decided to capture.
- Initially kept it on the stove and took the photo. The background ( tiles in the kitchen) did not look great. I wanted a background that was dark, that would contrast the white steam.
- Took the vessel to the hall and keep it against the backdrop of the front door
- Made a few more adjustments in the placement of the vessel so that sun rays was passing through the steam in the most beautiful manner
- The reflection on the floor also had to match the overall feel of the photograph
Post processing
The jpg version of the image was imported into GIMP. First things first,
The brown door in the background was very distracting. I had to remove that.
So changed the photo to black and white and increased the contrast. This served two purposes.
Firstly since the color of the steam was white ( almost greyish white ), with black and white photography, I could bring the ‘white’ness of the steam more attention and secondly the brown door which was already out of focus became almost black.
I used the paint brush tool to make any other visible part of the door, completely black
Finally the steel vessel from which the steam was emanating was reflecting a lot of light and hence I painted even that as black
