Learn to use camera features

Although material presented here is very specific to Nikon 300, you would be able to find similar settings in your camera as well. You could even google to learn more about your camera

Highlighting some of the features, I have missed and did not know about during my initial photography days

1. Range finder

This is very useful feature ( not available in the live mode )

Use the navigation keys to set the area you want to focus

Where is this useful ? lens without auto focus

2. Continuous numbering

the default is to start numbering from the beginning t( that is 1 ) as soon as you format your memory card. What that means is that if you have a photo named DSC_0001.jpg, 0002, 0003 etc the next time you format, the number will again start from 0001. This becomes a problem when you start referring your photos later. That is you might make a note saying that the photo DSC_945.jpg contains a good evening shot that you would want to show the client. But the numbering has restarted several times in course of few months, searching for this file name in your computer returns several results.

3. Decrease or increase flash intensity

You don’t prefer the white paint looks on the face of people thanks to flash. You can now reduce the flash of your subject, so as to give only enough light

Want more juice ? Increase flash capability

4.  Your camera offers more white balance than you can ever imagine

After carefully going through the manual I understood that there are several white balance setting than the ones ready avaiable from the live view menu.

<add screenshot from the basic menu , that is when you press the ‘i’ button>

< add screenshot from the ‘menu’ button>

5. Increase the LCD off time
